32 people arrested in PH for alleged hoarding and reselling of mask and medical supplies

Police have arrested 32 persons, including a Chinese businesswoman, for allegedly hoarding face masks and other medical supplies and reselling them at higher prices to take advantage of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) crisis.

Maj. Gen. Jose Napoleon Coronel, director of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG), said the series of operations in Metro Manila and other parts of Luzon resulted in the confiscation of almost P13 million worth of face masks and other medical supplies.

According to Coronel, in a span of 48 hours, the CIDG conducted a total of 13 police operations resulting in the arrest of 33 individuals including four members of a criminal gang and the confiscation of alcohols, hand sanitizers, and face masks.

“They were selling overpriced alcohol. They were all arrested during separate entrapment operations,” Coronel said.

Violations of Republic Act 7581 (Price Act) as amended by RA 10623 and RA 7394 (Consumer Act of the Philippines) all in relation to RA 10175 (Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012), Art 14 of the RPC (Aggravating Circumstances), DTI (Department of Trade and Industry) Memorandum Circular# 20-07 (Anti-Hoarding and Anti-Panic Buying), and Proclamation No. 922 will be filed against the arrested persons through inquest proceedings.
