Taiwan is expanding the number of migrant workers to its livestock industry due to labor shortage problem according to the country's Council of Agriculture (COA).

The Employment Service Act governing qualifications and criteria for foreign workers was amended on July 31 this year to bring the whole livestock industry into the trial program, Taiwan News reported.

Earlier this year, COA opened ita dairy industry to foreign workers under a trial program.

COA has invited several agencies to participate in holding nine seminars in order to help livestock proprietors understand the privileges and obligations they have in hiring foreign workers.

COA said that both Thailand and the Philippines have agreed to allow their workers to take up employment in Taiwan's agricultural sector after reviewing sample employment contracts provided by Taiwan's labor ministry.

In order to protect migrant workers' rights, the source countries require employment contracts to be verified before allowing their workers to work abroad, according to the MOL.
