Taiwan to use point-based system for opening its borders to migrant workers


A draft plan has been presented to the Central Epidemic Command Center for the reopening of border for migrant workers to ease the labor shortage of Taiwan.

Taiwan is considering easing its entry restriction to migrant workers by using a points-based system according to Labor Minister Hsu Ming-chun.

Prospective migrant workers will be given points for things as discussed by Hsu to Taiwan's Legislature's Social Welfare and Environmental Hygiene Committee.

Being fully vaccinated and having a relatively stable COVID-19 situation in their home countries are two of the point inclusions.

Other point is the capability of employers in Taiwan applying to bring in workers from overseas, like proper home quaratine.

Thise with the highest points will be given priority for entering Taiwan according to Ministry of Labor's Workforce Development Agency (WDA).

Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines and Vietnam are currently the four biggest sources of foreign workers in Taiwan. (Photo Taiwan News)
