Haze hits Taiwan over the weekend, poor air quality may reach unhealthy level

Air quality in southern Taiwan is expected to reach an unhealthy level for sensitive groups over the weekend, as the first wave of air pollutants from overseas since the autumn arrives with seasonal northeasterly winds, according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Several locations in western Taiwan saw the air quality index change to "moderate" on Friday from "good" a day earlier, according to the EPA's air quality monitoring website.

Two locations on the northern coast of Taiwan -- Wanli and Fuguei Cape -- recorded the highest density of fine particulate matter, which reached unhealthy levels Friday morning, the EPA pointed out.

Meanwhile, air quality in Kaohsiung began to deteriorate in the late afternoon, with readings at three locations in the southern city hitting an unhealthy level for sensitive groups after being moderate at 6 p.m., the website showed.

According to the EPA's forecast released at 4:30 p.m., Kaohsiung and Pingtung are flashing an orange warning for unhealthy levels of air quality through Sunday, because of the accumulation of air pollutants.

The rest of western Taiwan is expected to see moderate air quality, with conditions in northern Taiwan set to improve to "good" on Sunday. In eastern parts of the country, air quality will be good throughout the weekend, the forecast showed. - Central News Agency
