Compal Electronics skips its year end party or 'weiya' due to pandemic, will other companies follow?

The year end party before the Lunar New Year is celebrated by several companies in Taiwan. However, due to the impact of COVID-19 pandemic this year, the company has announced the cancellation of weiya.

The infection of COVID-19 may increase in winter according to the company. Many company executives also toast to employees at a table that may increase the risk of infection.  

Employees are still waiting for announcements pertaining to how the highlight of year-end parties like the prize draw and where it will be held.

Companies such as Hon Hai Precision, Quanta Computers, Inventec, Pegatron and Wistron Neweb began to get into it and hesitates about whether or not to do the year end party.

Weiya is an occasion for employers in Taiwan to treat their employees to a banquet to thank them for their hard work throughout the year. This is to show their thankfulness for their employee’s hard work over the past year.
