Taiwan records year high 2,338 cases of gonorrhea, a form of sexually transmitted disease

Taiwan recorded a year high of 2,338 people with gonorrhea, it is a five-year high during the first five months of the year.

Gonorrhea is a sexually transmitted disease (STD). You get it from having sex with someone who is infected with it. You may have heard people call it “the clap.” Both men and women can get it, though men get it more often than women, webmd stated.

The total number of cases represent the 37.3 percent growth from the same period last year. Figures for the January-May period over the past five years are 1,726 (2016); 1,943 (2017); 1,719 (2018); 1,703 (2019); and 2,338 (2020), Taiwan news reported.

The reasons behind the surge could be unprotected sex and having multiple sex partners, said Lin Yung-ching, a physician at the Taiwan CDC. Around 75.6 percent of the confirmed cases so far this year occurred in the 20 to 39 age group, the report added.

Gonorrhea can cause very serious complications when not treated, but can be cured with the right medication.
