Taiwan's migrant caregivers earn less than NT$20,000 a month while working 10.5 hours per day

A survey revealed that migrant caregivers in Taiwan work an average of 10.5 hours per day, but make less than NT$20,000 per month according to data of the Ministry of Labor (MOL).

According to the survey, migrant workers in Taiwan earned an average salary of NT$28,583 and worked a total of 194.7 hours, while migrant caregivers made an average of NT$19,918 that month while working about 10.5 hours a day, Taiwan News reported.

The average salary of foreign caregivers in June was NT$114 less than 2019 on a base salary of NT$17,436. It was NT$29 less in terms of an overall salary of NT$19,918; while the average overtime pay was NT$2,075, or NT$16 more than the previous year.

In addition, under Taiwan law, migrant domestic workers are not eligible to receive overtime wages, severance pay, occupational injury compensation, or retirement benefits, said Migrants Empowerment Network in Taiwan (MENT) group.

About one-third of the 700,000 migrant workers in Taiwan were employed in the household service sector, MOL data showed.

The ministry said that the Labor Standards Act did not apply to migrant domestic helpers because they had different work hours and patterns than migrant workers in the manufacturing and business sectors.
