Delivery rider hits lotto jackpot, won P33-million

The delivery rider has already collected his winning prize, according to Royina Garma, general manager of the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO).

The PCSO no longer specifies the identity of the winner for its protection.

The delivery rider's winning combo was drawn on April 20, 2022 and the rider collected it the next day.

His winning numbers are 02-05-10-30-27-19 Megalotto 6/45.

The exact amount he won was PHP33,070,560.40.

Before becoming a millionaire, the delivery rider used to earn only enough. Like many, he aspired to hit the lottery.

During the pandemic, he bets on the lotto occasionally. And he did not fail because he was lucky.

“Iniisip ko po na ito po ang kaloob ng Diyos sa akin," according rider in a released statement from PCSO.

"Dahil sa nakaraang dalawang taon na nasa pandemya tayo, hindi po kami tumigil sa pagtatrabaho at maghatid ng mga pagkain at parcel sa mga taong hindi makalabas ng kanilang mga tahanan.”

Fish and vegetable vendor, elected as mayor in Eastern Samar

A market vendor of fish and vegetables was elected the new mayor of Dolores, Eastern Samar.

Rodrigo “Onoy” Rivera, 62, defeated his mayoral opponent Dr.  Zaldy Carpeso, brother of the incumbent mayor in the area.

Rivera's only vote lead was 562. He got 11,508 votes, while Dr.  Zaldy had 10,946 votes.

Rivera then served as barangay chairman for nine years in Gap-ang in Dolores.  He reached second year of high school.

When his term ended in 2010, Rivera sold fish and vegetables at the market.

Rivera's opponent is a political family but he was not discouraged to run as an independent candidate.

Despite the lack of funds, he was enthusiastic in his campaign, assisted by volunteers. He won the hearts of the residents because of his aspirations.

"Direkta akong nakikipag-usap sa mga tao. Inihain ko ang aking sarili sa kanila na isa ring mahirap. Inilatag ko ang aking mga plataporma para sa mga mahihirap na tulad ko,” Rivera said in a speech.

Toots Ople to OFWs: Don’t see yourself as kawawa

Susan “Toots” Ople has accepted the offer of president Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.  to head the newly established Department of Migrant Workers (DMW).

According to Ople, the welfare of Filipinos working abroad is Marcos' main directive to him as head of the DMW.

"We cannot go into details but I think what’s important is the overall tone of the conversation which is that we should make sure that workers' protection is paramount and we also need to balance that because we’re a player in the global economy," Ople explained.

"We need to be conscious of the demands of the supply chain while making sure that labor rights are not compromised,” Ople added.

Ople promised that they will review the hiring system of OFWs because there are “good” employees who can be easily recruited by “bad” employers.

Ople is the daughter of late former Senate President, former Labor, and former Foreign Affairs Secretary Blas Ople.

She founded and headed the Blas F. Ople Policy Center and Training Institute (Ople Center), a non-profit organization that focuses on upholding migrant workers’ rights and welfare.

Full face-to-face classes sa lahat ng eskwelahan, ipapatupad na ng DepEd

Umaasa ang Department of Education (DepEd) na magiging face-to-face na ang mga klase sa lahat ng eskwelahan sa susunod na school year.

Magbibigay ng iba't ibang plano ang regional offices tungkol sa paraan ng klase depende sa magiging pagsusuri at rekomendasyon ng Department of Health at local government units sa bawat lugar.

“So, right now, ang sinasabi ko 73.28 percent na ng public schools at saka meron ding tayong mga private schools na inu-urge natin, ine-encourage natin na bumalik na sila sa face-to-face,” ayon kay outgoing secretary Leonor Briones sa Laging Handa public briefing.

“By June, which is already a few days away from now, sa next academic school year, ini-expect natin na fully 100% na talaga 'yung pag-implement natin ng face-to-face classes,” dagdag niya.

Samantala, pabor din naman ang DOH sa panukalang ibalik na ang mga estudyante sa face-to-face learning.

“Face-to-face attendance in school will allow children to develop their cognitive and social skills experientially,” ayon naman sa DOH.

“F2F promotes physical and mental health and well-being.  This is based on the latest scientific evidence,” dagdag ng ahensya.

Japan lifts tourism ban, puts Philippines on blue list

Japan will loosen more its border control policy and quarantine requirements starting June and has placed Philippines and 97 more countries on its blue list with low COVID-19 infection rates.

Under Japan's COVID-19 border control measures which categorize countries and regions into three groups -- red, yellow and blue -- depending on their assessed level of virus risk.

Travellers arriving from countries or regions on the blue list would be able to bypass quarantine as long as they pass a pre-departure PCR test, according to the Foreign Ministry.

Those on the yellow list would require proof of vaccination with selected vaccines to skip quarantine.

Travelers from red list will be required to undergo a test upon arrival and isolate for at least three days at a designated facility

Japan has already announced it would double its cap on overseas arrivals to 20,000 a day starting in June, far below the levels seen before the pandemic. 

Japan also announced that starting June 10, foreign travelers may also enter as part of guided tour groups with set itineraries.

Monkeypox outbreak growing around the world, not as contagious as COVID-19

Monkeypox is a virus that can cause symptoms including fever, aches and presents with a distinctive bumpy rash or lesions.

The rash usually begins within one to three days after the onset of fever.

Lesions can be flat or slightly raised, filled with clear or yellowish fluid, and can then crust, dry up, and fall off, according to World Health Organization (WHO).

The incubation of the disease can range from five to 21 days.

Experts believe the current monkeypox outbreak is being spread through close, intimate skin on skin contact with someone who has an active rash. That should make its spread easier to contain.

It is related to smallpox, but is usually milder. Most people fully recover in two to four weeks, according to health officials. The virus is not as easily transmitted as the SARS-CoV-2 virus that spurred the global COVID-19 pandemic.

Meanwhile, Philippines continues to monitor the outbreak of monkeypox overseas but the closure of borders is still unlikely.

The Department of Health (DOH) said there was no case yet of monkeypox detected in the Philippines but assured the public that it has intensified border control to avoid the entry of the disease in the country.

BBM's promise of P20 per kilo of rice, possible– NEDA

The promise of president-elect Bongbong Marcos Jr.  of P20 per kilo of rice is possible if farmers receive proper support according to the National Economic Development Authority (NEDA).

NEDA Secretary Karl Kendrick Chua said BBM's plan to lower the price of rice to P20 per kilo is possible. This can be done, Chua said, under the Rice Tariffication Law.

“Under Rice Tariffication, the programs are expected to increase the yield per hectare from four metric tons to five or six metric tons, so that is possible actually,” Chua said.

Chua added that it is necessary to support rice production through targeted subsidies for farmers and this will not be possible if the said law is repealed.

Chua also stated that the next administration needs to continue fiscal policy, economic reforms and programs under the Duterte administration.

Just like the programs that should be continued are the tax reform program, rice tariffication, Build Build Build and many more that boosts the Philippine economy.

Chua said the economic team is ready to discuss with the new administration to lay out what else should and should not be done for economic growth.

4th dose against COVID-19 recommended for OFWs, seafarers: PH Vaccine czar

Administration of the fourth dose COVID-19 vaccine or the second booster is recommended of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) and seafarers per Vaccine czar Secretary Carlito Galvez Jr.

The Department of Health (DOH) earlier said that the Food and Drug Administration has already issued emergency use authorization for the administration of second boosters for the immunocompromised, senior citizens, and health workers.

However, the recommendation of the Health Technology Assessment Council (HTAC) for now is to only administer these doses to immunocompromised individuals.

"Because of the current urgency of the situation, we are appealing to the HTAC to expedite the inclusion of the healthcare workers kasi ‘pag nag-uptick po tayo, hawa-hawa po ang ating healthcare workers," Galvez explained.

Vice President - elect Sara Duterte-Carpio will push for mandatory military service for Filipinos aged 18 years old, she will be the secretary of Department of Education (DepEd) soon.

She explained that her proposal is not like the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps — that her father, President Rodrigo Duterte also wanted to be revived but did not materialize — as a mandatory subject, nor would it be a month-long training or for weekends.

Duterte is an Army reservist, said she plans to use the vice president’s office to urge Congress to pass a military conscription law, similar to policies in South Korea and Israel.
