MECO clarifies travel ban issued by DOH to Taiwan, temporary travel ban stays

The Department of Health has reported that in response to the Wuhan virus epidemic, China, Hong Kong, Macao and just included Taiwan were banned from air traffic per 'One-China policy.

Manila Economic and Cultural Office (MECO) clarified that the Philippines did not bar Taiwanese from entering the country. MECO director Angelito Banayo has apologized for the confusion, LTN reported.

Banayo also clarifies that the ban was based on the political classification of World Health Organization (WHO) that listed Taiwan as part of China, including Hong Kong and Macau.

DOH undersecretary Eric Domingo quoted "Since we have a temporary travel restriction on China, then Taiwan is included."

"When we asked the World Health Organization very, very clearly, they always refer to just one China and Taiwan is included, even in their official reports,” he added.

Currently, no tourist ban is imposed on Taiwan but Filipinos are barred from leaving the Philippines.  Banayo also apologized for the confounding statement.
