Taiwan starts clinical trials of antiviral drug remdesivir to infected patients over coronavirus


National Taiwan University Hospital (NTUH) has already consulted with the United States and is to start clinical trials in Taiwan of the antiviral drug remdesivir to fight novel coronavirus or COVID-19.


Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) said "Remdesivir" could provide an effective treatment for COVID-19 victims and NTUH is preparing to make Taiwan part of the clinical research.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the first U.S. clinical trial use of remdesivir on patients with coronavirus.

The clinicla trials is to evaluate the efficacy of the experimental antiviral drug whether the results are successful or not. The antiviral drus was developed by American biotech firm Gilead Sciences.


Under Taiwan government's plan, one hospital each in northern, central and southern Taiwan will be designated for the screening of potential patients for the clinical trials.

Remdesivir effectively kills virus from killers like Ebola and SARS. Taiwanese researchers said they were able to make a small amount of remdesivir, it is by far the only drug that could possibly treat COVID-19.
