Number of migrant workers in Taiwan drops due to strict border control amid pandemic


Taiwan's number of migrant workers dropped below 700,000 due to the implementtion of border control due to COVID-19 pandemic according to the latest statistics from Ministry of Labor (MOL).


The total number of migrant worker began to drop continuously due to border control measures, reaching 699,154 from 719,487 in September 2018.


Daily arrivals of migrant workers averaged 624 last year, but average arrivals in August and September of this year totaled approximately 160 each month according to MOL official Hsueh Chien-chung.


Additionally, MOL also said that employers of migrant workers can apply to extend their contracts by three months amid the Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.


More than 80,000 migrant workers have been able to stay at their current jobs or obtain new employment in the country as it is the government efforts to reduce human flow.
