Companies in Taiwan prepare for unpaid leave for employees due to COVID-19 impact


Some companies in Taiwan prepares to furloughs or unpaid leave of absense to employees in three major cities in the country due to impact by the novel coronavirus or COVID-19.


Five companies in the city have furloughed a total of 468 employees due to the COVID-19 outbreak according to Labor Affairs Bureau of the Tainan City government.

The businesses that furlough employees are related to textiles, machinery, as well as several other industries that have low demand due to the outbreak, per bureau.

The bureau will dispatch labor inspectors to check if the business employs foreign workers. A breach of the Employment Service Act if only foreign workers are forced to have leave.

Four businesses in the electronics and tourism sectors have implemented unpaid leave in Kaohsiung and nine businesses in Taipei.
