DOST to study virgin coconut oil as cure for COVID-19

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) will be conducting clinical studies on how virgin coconut oil (VCO) can be used as treatment for the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19), which currently still has no approved vaccine or cure.

“This research of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) on virgin coconut oil (VCO) is planned to have two arms: one hospital-based and one community-based,” DOST Secretary Fortunato de la Peña said in a statement.

Dr Marissa Alejandria will facilitate the hospital-based study at the University of the Philippines-Philippine General Hospital (UP-PGH), where virgin coconut oil will be administered to COVID-19 patients as a supplement to their daily treatment regimen.

"This arm may possibly run for a minimum of one month or until the minimum number of patients has been achieved," De La Peña said.

There is no vaccine or cure yet for the new strain of coronavirus although the World Health Organization has begun what it calls the "Solidarity Trial," a multi-country clinical test on four drugs and combinations that might be effective in treating patients with COVID-19.
