Taiwan donates 300,000 surgical masks to Philippines as COVID-19 response


There are 300,000 surgical mask, donated by Taiwan government, which are set to arrive in Manila on Wednesday according to Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO) in the Philippines in a statement, Monday evening.


The donation is part of Taiwan's pledge last April 9 to give six million masks to regional countries as a help in battling the COVID-19 pandemic.

The government said that Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam and India are also marked to receive 100,000 to 300,000 masks, depending on their population and urgency of the situation.

According to Kendra Yungshao Chen, deputy director-general of the MOFA's Department of European Affairs, at a press conference on Tuesday, Taiwan will also send  1.3 million face masks out of the 6 million pledged to eight European countries including Slovakia, Austria, Sweden, Denmark, Slovenia, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.

Taiwan's mask diplomacy campaign was first launched on April 1 when it vowed to donate 10 million masks to European countries, the United States and diplomatic allies.
