Taiwan suspends International Hot Air Balloon Festival in Taitung amid COVID-19 pandemic


Taiwan’s tourism industry is greatly affected by the new coronavirus or COVID-19 as it recently postpone Taitung's grandest International Hot Air Balloon Festival originally slated at the end of June, announced by Taitung tourism bureau.


Eight model balloons from Europe and the United States already cancelled their participation on the said event.

Moreover, as long as European and American pilots come to Taiwan for the events and activities, they must quarantine at home for 14 days which is a problem.

The event will be postponed but the number of days of postponement still in question since the even lasts 51 days, only time can tell of the virus will be stopped by that time.


The Taitung International Hot Air Balloon Festival has entered its 10th anniversary and the Taitung County Government already planned many celebrations and increase people's willingness to visit Taitung, but COVID-19 won't let it happen.

The Tourism Bureau pointed out that the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) has recently indicated to discontinue events with lots of spectators.

Public gatherings with more than 100 people indoors and more than 500 people outdoor are recommended to be closed, so as the hot air balloon festival. Follow-up development will be announced in early of the event will be moved or cancelled indefinitely.
