Taiwanese experts creates 2-minute COVID-19 test kit for severe virus infections

Taiwanese researchers in Taiwan’s Hsinchu City developed a quick test for COVID-19 patients that can detect potentially severe cases in just two minutes.

The test is conducive to timely intervention and lower fatality rates, the kit is now in the clinical trial phase. National Tsing Hua University and Tri-Service General Hospital created the prototype of the rapid test kit.

The test kit requires just a droplet of the patient’s blood plasma, a result will come out in less than two minutes just like a pregnancy test.

The appearance of two lines on the window of the test kit indicates a positive result according to Cheng Chao-min, a professor at the university's Institute of Biomedical Engineering.

Pwith severe infections of the disease have significantly higher levels of serum interleukin (IL‐6), a cytokine that triggers the body's immune and inflammatory response to fight infections which the kit can easily detect.

The research team has also filed an application with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for emergency use authorization (EUA) of the test kit.
