Taiwan Holiday: Row away and have fun with Dragon Boat Festival

The Dragon Boat Festival is a traditional holiday celebrated in Taiwan and other parts of the world. It usually falls on the 5th day of the 5th month of the lunar calendar, which typically corresponds to late May or June in the Gregorian calendar. In 2025, it will be celebrated on May 31st.

Dragon Boat Races: Held in major cities like Taipei, Kaohsiung, Tainan, Lukang, and Hualien. Teams race in long, narrow boats shaped like dragons, to the beat of drums.

The races are a major public spectacle and often include festivals and performances.

Zongzi: A traditional food made of glutinous rice stuffed with ingredients like pork, mushrooms, egg yolks, and peanuts, wrapped in bamboo leaves.

Zongzi is steamed or boiled and symbolizes commemoration of Qu Yuan, a patriotic poet.

The Dragon Boat Festival is very important in Taiwan, both culturally and socially. It is one of the three major traditional holidays alongside Lunar New Year and Mid-Autumn Festival.

The festival commemorates Qu Yuan, a loyal poet and statesman from ancient China. It reflects values of patriotism, integrity, and remembrance, which resonate strongly in Taiwanese cultural education.

Dragon Boat Festival is a national holiday in Taiwan.
