Taiwan President Lai Ching-te has announced that the government plans to include a universal NT$10,000 cash handout in the proposed 2027 central government budget.
According to the Presidential Office, the government has allocated NT$235.7 billion (approximately US$7.4 billion) to fund the nationwide cash distribution.
Lai said the additional funding was made possible by stronger-than-expected economic growth, particularly the continued expansion of Taiwan's artificial intelligence (AI) and related technology industries.
The projected central government revenue for 2027 has been raised to approximately NT$3.9266 trillion. With the higher revenue forecast, the government says it can finance the cash handout while maintaining a balanced budget and avoiding significant new borrowing.
The proposed NT$10,000 payment would be available to eligible people across Taiwan, making it a universal cash assistance program rather than one limited to specific income groups.
The announcement comes as Taiwan continues to benefit from strong demand for AI-related products, including semiconductors, advanced computing components and AI servers.
President Lai emphasized that the government's stronger financial position provides room to return part of the economic gains to the public while maintaining fiscal stability.
The proposed 2027 budget will still need to go through the government's budgetary process before the cash handout can be implemented.
