Poor households to receive P5k - P8k financial support from Philippine government

About 18.5 million poor households affected by the community quarantine are going to receive 5,000 to 8,000 pesos cash assistance per month as stated by the law proposed by the congress last Monday, March 23.

This is the congress' response to a call by President Rodrigo Duterte to rush measures to cope up with the COVID-19 pandemic, each low-income household is projected to receive around P5,000 to P8,000 per month for two months from various national government and local government programs, "whether in cash or kind, but mostly food."

Senate President Vicente Sotto III, on a radio interview, said that giving out cash to affected families is more efficient than distributing foods and supplies.

“Ang mga local government unit, hirap na sa pondo… Imbis na mag-prepare ka, ibabalot mo, idi-distribute mo, pera na ang ibigay natin sa tao doon sa mga 18 million families na isang kahig, isang tuka,” said Sotto.

Sotto added that the funds for the proposed law will be coming from government owned and controlled corporations.
