Hospital in Taiwan gave a Filipino a new lease on life after removing a tumor in his face


Michael Mahusay, 26, had a 12-centimeter "cemento-ossifying fibroma" on his left face for more than four years.


The huge tumor almost "swallowed" Michael's half face that affects his chewing, swallowing, and other fave movements.  Even the eyes and nose were squeezed and deformed, he only breathe with his mouth.

The assistance of the Tzu Chi volunteers in the Philippines, Michael transferred to Hualien Tzu Chi Hospital for medical treatment. From that he changed his face and successfully discharged.


Michael recalled that the tumor was getting bigger every year, almost half of his face was absorbed and his face became deformed, his eyesight is also affected.

His condition makes his girlfriend leave him together with their son.

Tzu Chi International Medical Association (TIMA) arranged charitable medical outreach in 15 countries as Mahusay flew to Hualien Tzu Chi Hospital for treatment.


Mahusay went to total of 9 surgeries over four months. Mahusay thanked everyone that at least five him a second chance to have a good life as he plans to go back to Philippines to have a job and to reunite with his girlfriend and son. (Photos: CNA)
