Kaohsiung remains as Taiwan's 'Air Pollution Capital'

Kaohsiung still tops the list of all counties and cities in Taiwan with the worst air pollution for three years on a row, according to environmentalist action group Air Clean Taiwan (ACT), per Taiwan News.

Kaohsiung's southern industrial zone and its port area has the worst record with an average PM2.5 value of 26.1 micrograms of cubic meter per air in 2019.

Presence of petrochemical industry, steel plants and a coal-fired power station had all contributed to Kaohsiung’s place at the top of the pollution list for three years running, according to ACT.

After Kaohsiung, Pingtung County, Chiayi City, Tainan City and Kinmen are the top 5 with worst areas for PM2.5 air pollution.

Meanwhile, only Yilan and Taitung are the only counties having clean air. Joining the two counties are Yangmingshan National Park in Taipei City and the Hengchun Peninsula in Pingtung County.

Overall, the air quality in western Taiwan specially in southern Taiwan is getting worse.
