Taiwan-made AI-facial detection infrared thermometer gained interest from Southeast Asian nations

Taiwan made smart next-generation infrared thermometers have gained the interest of Southeast Asian nations to acquire them. These thermometers has feature of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies.

The AI feature of the infrared thermometers is to detect people's faces before reading their temperatures. This feature will able to reduce false readings, for example, a cup of hot coffee or cold drink temperature reading.

The device will sound an alarm and take photos of individuals whose temperatures exceed a set temperature level. They are priced at NT$200,000 per unit which is cost-competitive.

The feature is particularly commercially attractive at a time when countries around the world are deploying thermometers to screen suspected patients of the coronavirus, Taiwan News reported.

The AI-based thermometers were designed by Taiwan government sponsored National Health Research Institute (NHRI), the same institute that is making rapid test kits for COVID-19.

According to NHRI’s Institute of Biomedical Engineering and Nanomedicine, the system delivered satisfactory results in an experiment of 200 people in open spaces. The masks, hats, and glasses the individuals wore were not found to have affected the temperature readings, it added.
