Philvolcs: There is a possibility of a Magnitude 7.2 earthquake in Mindanao

There is a possibility that a destructive 7.2-magnitude earthquake may hit Mindanao if the Makilala-Malungon Fault move, according to Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS).

Phivolcs is monitoring closely all the active fault lines in the affected region to determine what triggers the series of destructive earthquakes in the last two weeks.

“Ine-entertain namin lahat ng possibilities sa lahat ng aktibong fault doon. Pero ang pinakamalala nga na scenario is having the Makilala-Malungon Fault that would move" said Ishmael Narag, officer-in-charge of the Prediction Division of Phivolcs.

"Based on the length of that fault (Makilala-Malungon) puwede itong mag-generate ng magnitude-7.2 earthquake, that’s assuming na magra-rupture itong napakahabang fault na ito,” he added.

"Kung ikukumpara natin ito dun sa 6.6, mas matindi siyempre ‘yung pwedeng mangyari. We are talking about a fault beneath another set of municipalities,” he continued.

Phivolcs had earlier stressed that Central Mindanao is the seismically active regions in the Philippines because of the presence of several active faults. These faults are M’lang Fault, Makilala-Malungon Fault, North Columbio Fault, South Columbio Fault, and the Cotabato-Sindangan Fault.
