Over 4,000 OFW stranded due to COVID-19 test delays caused by issue between Philhealth and PH Red Cross

Over 4,000 Overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) are staranded in Metro Manila bearing the brunt of the payment issues between the Philippine Red Cross (PRC) and the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth).

Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III cited the issue involving the Philippine Red Cross and Philhealth as reason for this.

"That's our problem in terms of expenses and in terms of taking care of our OFWs," Bello said. "The sooner this issue of payment is resolved, the better for our OFWs, better for the finances of our government."

“That is now a problem. They are staying longer.  Before they stayed only (for) as long 3 to 4 days now they are staying beyond one week. That’s our problem in terms of expenses and in terms of taking care of our OFWs,” he said.

Red Cross said it will not resume conducting COVID-19 tests chargeable to PhilHealth unless the state insurance agency pays its overdue balance of P930.99 million.
