Philippines ranks as 18th country with most number of COVID-19 cases in the world

The Philippines just landed on the 18th place among the countries with highest number of COVID-19 cases worldwide, according to the virus tracker of John's Hopkins University in Maryland.

With more than 314,000 cases reported on Thursday (October 1), the Philippines surpassed Pakistan for 20th place despite of it being the country with longest lockdown.

According to the Department of Health (DOH), the numerous number of cases in the country can only be attributed to the "big improvement" in COVID-19 testing.

DOH Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeir even said that the focus should only be with the active cases excluding those recovered or dead patients who have tested positive for the virus.

“We might be in the top 20 with the number of cases, but when we look at our health system capacity, it has improved tremendously,” said Vergeire.
