Samu't-sari umanong ulat ang natatanggap ng dating kalihim ng Department of Agriculture at ngayo'y incumbent Chairperson ng Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) na si Emmanuel "Many" Piñol patungkol sa ilegal na pagmimina na isinasagawa sa protected area ng Mt. Apo sa Davao City.
Sa isang Facebook post nito lamang Disyembre 8, sinabi ni Piñol na nakatanggap siya ng reklamo tungkol sa isang grupo ng Department of Environment and Natural Resources na nagtatago umano sa ilegal na proseso ng pagmimina at pagpuputol ng puno.
“Today, I received a report that a team from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources uncovered illegal mining operations and cutting of hardwood inside the Mt. Apo Protected Area in Barangay Don Panaca, Magpet, North Cotabato,” sabi ni Piñol sa kaniyang post.
Ang itinuturo sa likod ng nadiskubreng ilegal na gawaing ito ay mga opisyal ng gobyerno na pinoprotektahan umano ng mga sundalo.
“What makes this discovery totally outrageous was the confirmation that local officials, allegedly protected by Army soldiers, are behind the mining and clearing operations inside one the last remaining forest areas of Mindanao. The initial report also said that the poachers have started planting bananas in the areas cleared of natural growing trees," saad ni Piñol.
Dagdag ni Piñol, sa ngayon ay inutusan niya na ang mga kawani ng MinDa na makipag-ugnayan sa Mines and Geosciences Bureau ng DENR. Isang written report din daw ang isusumite kay Pangulong Rodrigo Duterte upang agarang maipatigil ang ilegal na gawain sa bundok Apo.
