Philippines now declared as bird-flu free country

The Department of Agriculture or DA has already declared the Philippines as Bird Flu Free country following the Declaration of the World Health Organization, but authorities are still monitoring other strains of avian influenza.

The AH5N6 strain has not been found on chickens and other poultry products in Pampanga, Rizal and other areas affected by bird flu in the country.

They have not monitored bird flu cases in the country for 90 days, after the cleaning and disinfection of the affected farms, according to Bureau of Animal Industry Ronnie Domingo.

At the moment, the agency is monitoring the highly pathogenic H5N8 strain that has been seen in France, South Korea, the Netherlands and Poland.

In connection with the country's protection against the said strain, a temporary ban on the importation of poultry in the said countries has been implemented. It will be recalled that the year 2017 was the first time the country was hit by the bird flu seen on some poultry farms in San Luis Pampanga.
