Lawmaker urges DSWD to give senior citizens' pension every 3 months

The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) was urged by Cagayan de Oro 2nd District Rep. Rufus Rodriguez to give the P500-monthly pension of senior citizens every three months instead of every six months.

During the online meeting last Thursday (March 4), the panel already pushed for the approval of House Resolution No. 1047 filed by Rodriguez aiming to have adjustment with the release of social pension for senior citizens since no participation from DSWD has been noted.

According to Rodriguez, the six months duration is too long to wait for senior citizens especially now that many lives were affected because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Due to lockdowns and quarantines in many parts of the country, many businesses struggled, resulting in loss of jobs for many Filipinos, including senior citizens who are still productive members of society," said Rodriguez.

"Now more than ever, these indigent senior citizens need financial assistance from the government," he added.

The congressman also reminded the Social Security System (SSS) to release the additional P1,000 in the monthly pension of private sector retirees.
